The National Association of Students of English and Literary Studies Press (NASELS Press) held a workshop on 2nd March 2024, in Room 38, Faculty of Art, University of Ibadan.

The workshop which was tagged “Digital Journalism and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)” had three speakers who graced the event with different topics of focus.

The first speaker, Aduwo Ayodele, the news editor of the Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan (UCJUI), spoke on news writing, which included the principles guiding news writing and the various components of news writing. Differences between news writing and feature writing were clearly stated, as well.

The second speaker, Mr Ayanboade Kehinde, spoke on digital journalism and the impact digitalization brings to the news world, which includes storage of information, wide spread of news stories, and being able to target your real audience. He also highlighted the negative effects, which revolve around the spread of fake news and the fear of journalism losing its accreditation as a result of unprofessional involvement in spreading news. “Everyone now owns a blog“, he said.

The third speaker, Mr Ogonna Jeremiah, a 300-level student of the Faculty of Law and Secretary of the Literary and Debating Society of University of Ibadan (TLDS UI), spoke on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) writing with an emphasis on keywords as an instrument to make your article rank first on search engines. He stated that everyone wants traffic on their blog but this goal can be accomplished through various things being put in place. Perspective was given as to how to go about SEO and the mistakes made by writers.

After the third speaker’s SEO training, the workshop came to an end after refreshments were served and pictures of NASELS Press members were taken.
