The English language is oftentimes the second language of Nigerians. As such, mother-tongue interference of the first or native language pervades spoken English in Nigeria. However, Nigerians can speak better if they work on it. Below are some of the errors Nigerians typically make in their everyday usage of English, including Nigerian students.
Wrong: Driver, I want to drop.
Correct: Driver, I want to alight.
Wrong: Kunle forgot to collect her change from the fufu-seller.
Correct: Kunle forgot to collect her balance from the fufu-seller.
Wrong: We discussed about her yesterday.
Correct: We discussed her yesterday.
Wrong: I prefer yam than rice.
Correct: I prefer yam to rice.
Wrong: You and me are not identical.
Correct: You and I are not identical.
Wrong: I’m hearing you.
Correct: I can hear you.
Wrong: Horn at the car in front.
Correct: Honk at the car in front.
Wrong: Tola is mannerless.
Correct: Tola is ill-mannered.
Wrong: My head is scratching me.
Correct: My head itches.
Wrong: Return it back.
Correct: Return it.
Wrong: She is lacking behind in her studies.
Correct: She is lagging behind in her studies.
Wrong: The soup is pepperish.
Correct: The soup is peppery.
