Amidst the workload of university life, juggling early morning lectures, back-to-back late-night studies, extracurricular activities, and a whirlwind of social scenes, students often get so caught up that they forget to prioritise one of the most fundamental human needs: Water. While it may seem like just a basic necessity, water is tasked with the duty of keeping us physically healthy, mentally sharp, and emotionally balanced. It is not just about quenching thirst; it is majorly a vital nutrient for life. Unfortunately, many students overlook its importance, and this can lead to an indistinct yet a significant health issue.
Water as a Nutrient

Even though water does not contain carbohydrates, proteins, or fats, it is still considered as a nutrient because it is essential for our bodies to function properly. In fact, it is the most vital nutrient we need, required in larger amounts than any other. Water helps with digestion, keeps our body temperature in check, and flushes out waste through urine and sweat. It also plays a key role in absorbing important water-soluble vitamins like Vitamin C and the B-complex vitamins.
Unlike other nutrients that provide energy, water acts as the medium for all metabolic processes. This makes it absolutely essential, especially for students who are constantly engaged in both mental and physical activities.
The Importance of Water for Students
One of the most important functions of water is its impact on brain function. The brain is made up of about 75% water, and even slight dehydration can lead to issues like poor concentration, headaches, memory problems, and heightened anxiety. For students, these symptoms can directly hinder academic performance. A student who is not properly hydrated during an exam might find it hard to recall information or concentrate on solving mathematical problems.
Water is essential for digestion, and it is something that often gets overlooked. Many students tend to eat a lot of processed foods like instant noodles, pastries, and fried snacks, but these things do not have enough fiber. When you do not drink enough water, your body has a tough time breaking down these foods, leading to issues like constipation, bloating, and stomach pain. However, staying hydrated helps keep everything running smoothly and prevents these problems from getting in the way of a student’s busy life.
Water is also key for anyone who is active. Whether you are into sports, dance, or just walking around the school, you lose fluids through sweat. It is very important to replace that lost water to keep your energy up and avoid cramps or dizziness.
Effects of Dehydration
Dehydration can lead to both short-term and long-term issues. Even mild dehydration can make you feel tired, give you a very dry mouth and cause headaches. If it gets worse, you might experience dizziness or you might have trouble focusing.
In the long run, not drinking enough water can lead to a higher chance of urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and even high blood pressure. It can also take a toll on your skin, causing breakouts problems that many students often blame on stress, reactions or inadequate skincare, without realising that hydration has a role here.
How Much Water is Enough?
Generally, adults should aim to drink about 2 to 3 liters (roughly 8–10 cups) of water each day. Of course, this can change based on how active you are, the weather, and what you eat. A simple way to check if you are hydrated is to look at the color of your urine: a light, pale yellow usually means you are good to go, while a darker shade suggests it is time to drink up.
Staying Hydrated: Practical Tips for Students
Even with packed schedules, there are a few easy and effective methods students can adopt to stay hydrated throughout the day;
✓Kick off your morning with at least a glass of water or a sachet of water before reaching out for tea, coffee, or breakfast.
✓Keep a reusable water bottle with you and refill it often.
✓If plain water feels a bit dull, you could add some lemon.
✓Choose water mostly instead of choosing soft drinks all the time when hanging around campus.
In conclusion, water might not come with a flashy label like a Gucci or an Adidas designer bag or an exciting ad, but its effect on student life is truly unmatched. The human body can probably go weeks without food, but only a few days without water is not possible. In the hustle of campus life, let us be reminded that the most essential nutrient we need everyday and every second is WATER.
