The National Association of Students of English and Literary Studies, University of Ibadan (NASELS UI), held her freshers’ orientation tagged “PLOT TWIST: NO LIMITS, OWN IT” on May 8, 2025.

The orientation program had in attendance the Head of Department, Professor Nelson Fashina; the Examination Officer of the department, Dr. Yemi Akinmurele; a senior lecturer in the department, Dr. Charles Akinsete; Dr. Olaniyan and Dr. Rita Okonoboh.

Dr. Charles Akinsete gave the freshmen several pieces of advice on how to navigate their university days. He emphasised on the importance of staying healthy and encouraged them to always look out for one another.

In like manner, Dr. Yemi Akinmurele, the Examination Officer, clarified the misconceptions that studying English will result in teaching the language alone. He further stated, “With your degree in English, you are a perfect candidate for the media also because studying English gives you a wide range of opportunities.” He concluded his speech by encouraging the students to have an open mind and explore various areas of interest.

The HOD, Professor Fashina, advised the new students to join a group or club with the intent of achieving success. Additionally, he revealed that over the years, the department has maintained a track record of excellence. He further encouraged the students to always make time to study.

A panel session was set up for the new students to ask questions on balancing academics with politics and entrepreneurship. In response, the panelists which included Obaloluwa Oladunjoye (400 level), Emmanuel Kolawole (400 level), and Ebenezer Adeyefa (300 level) shared and advised the freshmen from their wealth of knowledge.

NASELS’ Literary and Debating Society, Press, Christian Fellowship, and The Poetry Club representatives were also invited to sensitise the students on their activities with a call to join anyone that interests them.
