The University of Ibadan Student Union on January 13th, 2025 issued a 7-day ultimatum through an open to the Federal Government of Nigeria over the University College Hospital(UCH) electricity black-out over past two months.
The letter duly signed by the Student Union President, Aweda Bolaji and the General Secretary, Ogundijo Dolapo Japheth expressed the saddened status of the hospital due to electricity black-out that have persisted for over two consecutive months “ leaving critical departments and life-saving services in a dire state-this, including the education of University of Ibadan student-doctors resident in Alexander Brown Hall”, It reads.
The genesis of the disconnenction is said to be the result of the price reform introduced by the Ministry of Power in April 2024 which have resulted in astronomical increase in the cost of electricity.

Relatively, this current state is threatening to the students’ education and the gradual weakening of the Nigerian healthcare system as the future doctors are subjected to deplorable learning condition.
“As such, we give the Federal Government a 7-day ultimatum to address the pressing issue. Failure to act within this stipulated time will leave us with no option but to mobilize and protest against this continuous neglect by the government”, UI’SU demanded.
The Union calls for an immediate intervention of the government to resolve the matter as health care is a fundamental right and not a privilege.
