The National Association of Students of English and Literary Studies, University of Ibadan(NASELS UI) kicks off her departmental week with a Ted Talk on Monday, January 13th, 2025.

The Talk themed: Representation, Reflection and Reality: Exploring the Language of Communication addressed how language influences communication in the society. It is the tool with which man can use for the world he wants.

The event scheduled for 10 am commenced at 11:04 am with an opening speech by the staff adviser, Dr. Charles Akinsete. He welcomed the students to the first event of the departmental week. Emphasising on its relevance, “Nasels Week is an important aspect of Nasels’s life. It has to do with learning beyond the four walls of the classroom.” he said.

The keynote speaker, Mr. Afeez Aromire explained how that language is more than words and without it, there will not be any interaction. He disclosed how students can use language to annex opportunities and make differences in the community.

Speaking on the reflection and reality of language as students of English, he said, “your skill in language and literature is not just academic but an asset”. “It is your superpower,” he added. 

Mr. Richard Olugbenga, in a short address to the students explained the title “songwriting and intersection of language in music”. He relayed the collaboration of language and music as both help to communicate one way or the other. Addressing how this is relevant to English students, Mr. Richard said because they know how to use words and analyse themes. According to him, an English student can be a music journalist or critic, music analyst, content creator, creative consultant, among other opportunities.

The event also had a panel session which featured four panelists from varying mainstream industries. They are Mr. Ayo Adams from the film industry, Mr. Afeez Aromire from the journalism and storytelling industry, Mr. Richard Olugbenga from the music industry and Miss Mariam Adebusola from the Tourism industry.

The NASELS week, which began on Monday, January 13th, 2025 will span through the week until Saturday 18th, 2025 with different activities.
