The National Association of Students of English and Literary Studies, University of Ibadan (NASELS UI), held a congress on Thursday, December 19th, 2024, to address issues of executives’ negligence and the association’s banking challenges.

The Congress, chaired by President Olasubomi Adamson, approved disciplinary measures against the erring executives and deliberated on the banking report.  

During the meeting, the Probe Panel representative, Favour Akintola, presented the panel’s investigation of allegations levied against the four executive members, as well as the Panel’s decision. 

He reads that the General Secretary, Doris Okoh, who was found guilty of negligence of duty, has been suspended for two weeks. She is also required to submit an apology letter to the association.

The Assistant General Secretary, Halimah Ajibade, was cautioned for late responses to her official duties. Accordingly, she was required to write an apology letter to NASELSites.

The Treasurer, Adekunle Salau, who was alleged of making excessive jokes during executive council meetings. He is requested to write an official letter to the executive council. 

Lastly, the Public Relations Officer, Demilade Okunola who had failed to handle the association’s social media effectively. In the Probe Panel’s judgement, he has been suspended for two weeks while he is also expected to draft a visible plan on how to run his office and also to write an apology letter.  

Favour added, based on the departmental constitution, if the executives persist in these acts subsequently, their certificates of excellence will be withdrawn as stated in the constitution duties.

Pertaining to the aforementioned reasons, the President approved the panel’s punishment on the four executives with immediate effect after the Congress voted in support.  

On the issue of the association’s account, the Treasurer reported on the executive’s consultation with three banks: Fcmb, Access bank and First Bank. 

According to the report, Salau explained the banks’ varying demands to get the association a CAC. He said, “ Getting an association’s account is complex”

Consequently, it led to a debate over acquiring a Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). Some members suggested using a vendor or collaborating with the Head of Department to leverage the department’s CAC, but this proposal met opposition from other members who suggested going through a proper procedure.

In response to the congress’ concern about the signatories, President Adamson clarified the issue with the constitutional requirements for signatories.
