Ever since the advent of smartphones in Nigeria, the education sector has marked a significant turning point. Today, the internet is no longer a luxury but a vital tool for students. According to a National Bureau of Statistics report, over 80% of Nigerian students used the internet for academic purposes in 2020. This shift has been a game-changer, transforming the learning experience and providing students with versatile information and learning resources. These resources have not only been helpful during their academic journey but also provided invaluable information and impact beyond graduation.

Also, the internet provides students with the option of surfing the internet and downloading PDFs that are study-related.There is also the provision of study materials on e-libraries and Google Drive. The internet has become the backbone of student’s stress-free journey as students can easily get materials online rather than going to a bookshop to buy or the library to borrow.

Universities have embraced this digital transformation, ditching traditional handouts for slides. The formal classroom has advanced such that continuous assessments, attendance, and assignments are also online.

Speaking on how the internet enhances her learning experience, Adura, a third-year student, disclosed that “I can access my course materials online, which helps me stay organized and focused. I can also participate in online discussions and engage with my peers, which broadens my understanding and perspectives.”

Blessing, a student of the Department of English also shared her insight on how she uses the internet to her benefit. She said “First, I make sure I charge my phone every morning before my classes. I check my phone every minute because when I do not, I feel like I am missing out. I have never missed any impromptu class or test because I make sure I am updated by staying online.”

Online classes via Telegram, Zoom, and Google Meet have redefined the classroom, allowing students to learn from anywhere, at any time, and at their own pace. These platforms give the opportunity to attend a class without the inconvenience of running to classrooms. On apps like Moodle and WhatsApp, multiple course materials can be sent at a time, therefore, aiding speed in lecturing. Also, Impromptu classes, cancelled classes, tests, and other important information are relayed on WhatsApp and Telegram. This has made the internet an integral part of a student’s life which keeps them updated, focused, and convenient. Some scholars have argued that online classes are more helpful compared to physical classes.

Some students also use the internet as a recreational activity. Deborah, also a student of the Department of English shared that she uses the internet “to rewind and cope with stress and anxiety. “I make sure to spend at least 20 minutes a day watching videos on either TikTok or Facebook. It helps me stay balanced and focused on my studies,” she added.

Also, the internet has also fostered effective communication and relationship between students. Social media apps like WhatsApp and Facebook bridge the distance between students such that they can easily reach out to one another, engage in group discussions, and seek support when needed. It has also facilitated effective communication between students and lecturers. Students can easily reach out to their lecturers if they are facing any difficulties in a course. It has fostered accessibility between the students and the lecturer.

Additionally, in the world sphere, the internet has become an essential tool for career development, providing students with access to online job listings, and career resources. Students can now explore career options, build their professional network, and apply for online jobs with ease as long as they fit into the criteria provided.

With all these benefits, students have equipped themselves with phones, laptops, and other electronic gadgets because of their usefulness in education. However, there can be challenges related to network issues, insufficient recharge, and flat batteries while accessing the internet. However, these issues can be looked into. It is important to get solutions for these hindrances before they jeopardise the usefulness of the internet in one’s education.

In conclusion, despite these challenges, the internet has revolutionized the educational landscape in Nigeria. It has transformed the learning experience and provided students with versatile resources. However, it is crucial to address the challenges related to internet access, such as network issues, insufficient recharge, and flat batteries, to ensure that students can fully leverage its benefits. By doing so, we can guarantee that the internet continues to be a lifeline for university students, equipping them for success in an increasingly digital world and enhancing their prospects.
