The Student Representative Council (SRC) University of Ibadan, held its 3rd plenary session at the SRC Chamber on August 17, 2024, to discuss the State of the Union and the way forward, in respect to the earlier held Congress, which was concluded a couple of hours before the plenary session began.

Starting at around 3:15 pm, the session opened with the move to summon the Executive Council to give a report on the current State of the Union.

However, Hon. Sulaimon Afeez from the Great Independence Hall believed that the members of the Executive Council be spared if they did not show up, as there was presupposition in the House that they would not respond to the summons, hence, there should be preparation to take disciplinary action.

Hon. Sulaimon Afeez said, “Some of the honourable members were not present.”, referring to the Congress that was held earlier. He further stressed that the summoning of the Executive Council during the sitting was impromptu, stating, “they have their personal lives. They should not be sent to the disciplinary committee.” , he stated.

Hon. Aremo from the Mellanby Hall constituency beseeched the House not to pass judgements based on sentiments. He affirmed, “it is not stated in the constitution that honourable members must be in the Congress” he stated.

However, the motion to summon the attention of the executive council was moved and a letter of attention needed in the sitting was sent to the Executive Council from the House through the Clerk, to which a follow-up physical call was made.

As a result of the House failing to give the Executive Council an “ample” time before the Executive Council’s summoning, suggestions were made to reorder the order of the agenda of the sitting.

Feedback was brought back to the House that the President of the Union turned down the invite, while on reaching out to the Vice President of the Union, she responded that she was not in the right state of mind to talk about the State of the Union.

Having received these responses from the members of the Executive Council of the Union, suggestions were made that the Speaker of the House report on the State of the Union instead, to which he responded “I am not the best person to give a report on the State of the Union”.
