All the representatives of AFAS saw early elimination in the group stage of the ongoing SEALS Cup.
The five teams, which include English, Philosophy, History, Linguistics, and Anthropology, crashed out of the most coveted competition in the University of Ibadan.
The group-stage elimination came as a result of their abysmal performances in the group matches.
Philosophy was the biggest insider ahead of the tournament, having won the competition last session and being the runner-up two sessions ago but encountered a major setback in its first match against Veterinary Medicine.
The Plato Academic made a fantastic 2-0 win in its second match, but the draw played in the last group stage match made it fail to continue to defend its champion.
History came into the competition as one of the favourites with a run of wins in its friendly matches. However, its first defeat became a potential dead blow for its group-stage qualification and a win against Nursing in its last match was not enough to make it proceed to the quarter-finals.
English conceded 7 goals in 3 matches against Agricultural and Electrical Engineering, Microbiology, and Pharmacy, without scoring a goal. It left the tournament as the team with minus 7 goals.
The Department of Linguistics began the tournament with a 5-0 defeat. Though it won a game, the defeat in the third match was enough to give it an early exit from the competition.
Anthropology sat at the bottom of the Group G log with no point, having a minus 5 goal difference.
While Philosophy, History, and Linguistics ended their campaigns in the third positions in their respective groups, English and Anthropology sat at the bottom of their groups having lost all their matches.
As it stands, none of the AFAS team will feature in the quarter-finals, which will start on Monday 12 August 2024.
