On Thursday July 18, 2024, The Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan held its Day 5 training for campus journalists in local press organisations (LPOs) under the Faculty of Arts in the faculty premises, to train Campus Journalists on Features Writing, News Reporting, and Investigative Reporting.

The training which was held in Room 71 was attended by Campus Journalists from across the different Local Press Organisations in the faculty.

Speaking at the training, the Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Indy Press, Tolulope Ayeye who facilitated the session on features writing, explained to Campus Journalists that features writing is an extended form of news story with a focus on the human angle, hence, “It is subjective and should influence public opinions among many other impacts.” she stated.

Also, Mr Ayodele Aduwo, the Editor-in-Chief of Indy Press who also is seen as the finest investigative journalist on campus at the moment, facilitated the session on Investigative Reporting, “Investigative Reporting is for the sake of social justice.”, he stated. He further disclosed how it also involves collecting, verifying, and assessing information, “Investigative cases lie where power resides”, He added.

Both the Editor-in-Chief, UCJ UI, Tijani Abdulkabir and Politics Editor, UCJUI, Utibe Emmanuel, talked on News Reporting. They also admonished Journalists to be fair and unbiased in their reports, and that a news reporter should be inquisitive, have a nose for news, and prioritize timelines, “News reporting should be timely”, they both stated.

Finally, the President, UCJ UI, Tosanwunmi Elizabeth Tarre, while rounding off the training, explored the ethics of a journalist and appreciated everyone for their presence.
