The Students of the University of Ibadan, earlier on Wednesday July 17, have taken to the streets in the school premises to protest over the hike in school fees.
The protest which started initially as a result of the 10-hour power supply schedule on Campus that was released in a memo on Tuesday evening has resulted in the issuance of a protest resolution by the Students Union representative.
The entire student is requesting the reversal of the power supply schedule and all fees and not just a reduction.
Also, the victimization of the three students who once held a peaceful protest was condemned by the Students’ Union hence the need for a protest.
Wednesday July 17, 2024 has been declared a day free for the students to express their grievances and students troop out in their numbers with face caps, masks, and placards.
Protesters move from one hall of residence to another as they encourage other students to join the protest. They also moved from Queens Hall to the Faculty of Arts and other faculties as they peacefully halted any ongoing class to gain maximum cooperation from the Lecturers and Students. Faculties and departmental presidents are not also left out as some of them released a memo to show their support.
Vehicles and all forms of transportation are therefore not allowed to move into the school premises until the end of the protest. Kenneth Dike Library and other faculty libraries have been locked as everyone joined the peaceful protest to bring what they say “was given to them freely by Awolowo back to an affordable rate for every Uites.”
