Adeoye Lois and Adebowale Aminat

The National Association of English and Literary Studies, University of Ibadan (NASELS UI), held her first physical congress of the semester on Monday 24th June 2024, to fill the vacant executive positions in the department.

The Congress which was slated for 10:00 am and started at 10:15 am in Room 71, was proposed in the previous virtual congress in order to conduct a bye election for the interested members of the vacant positions.

The President of the association, Babatunde Adamson, who also doubled as the presiding officer, opened the congress by forming a quorum of 34 members from all levels. The General Secretary, Okoh Doris, read the minute of the last congress and the social director, Afolabi Gloria adopted the minutes seconded by Eniola Awolesi.

NASELSites officially voted in Ajibade Haleemah, Lolade Olabiyi and Korede Adeleye as the assistant general secretary, financial secretary and director of sports respectively after presenting their manifestos. In a call for the position of the treasurer by the president, Adekunle Salau and Ekah Deborah from the 400 level constituent indicated their interest in filling the position. However, Adekunle Salau emerged victorious securing 17 votes out of the 28 votes.

The president announced the commencement of the basic dues payment from Tuesday, 25th June 2024. He stated that the payment for dinner/award night has been made compulsory for finalists with an increment from ₦3,000 to ₦4,000 naira. He added that the decision was backed up by the staff advisor, Dr. Charles Akinsete, who also featured briefly at the congress. The news of the increment was met with mixed reactions by the finalists who were present at the congress. Members were also urged to come for the collection of last semester’s package, as it will be a “first-come-first-serve as there are few packages left”, the president of the association stated.

Progressively, the president addressed the WESTCOSELS’24 conference and urged all members of the association to actively participate in the programme. He hinted on the possibility of NASELS UI hosting the event, with which the department is expected to present 100 delegates and if not, members would be required to pay a registration fee of ₦10,000 for the event at any of the South Western states. 

Rounding up the congress, the social director, Afolabi Gloria solicited for the support and cooperation of NASELSites in bringing everyone together and to dutifully fill out the Google forms that are periodically sent to the departmental family WhatsApp page. The academic director, Adepoju Samuel re-stated his dedication to the department. He noted that tutorials will soon commence in earnest therefore, he encouraged members to brace up for the semester. In addition, Korede Adeleye, the newly elected director of sports, urged every student, especially the freshers, to actively participate in sporting activities. 

The congress was adjourned at 11:08am with the motion moved by Awolesi Eniola and seconded by Arowolo Anjolaoluwa.
