The National Association of Students of English and Literary Studies, University of Ibadan, held a virtual Congress to grant the approval of the newly drafted constitution yesterday, Saturday, May 18, 2024.
The congress, which was presided over by the president of the association, Adamson Babatunde, was held on Google Meet, where members from 100 – 400 levels were present. Following the opening of Congress, the president made a call to order, as he proceeded to request a motion to move on with the adoption of the former minute, and then to the agenda of the day.
While the president was speaking, a member of the association, from 300 level, raised the need for a quorum to be completed before the congress can progress. In response to this, the president clarified the need why the congress needs to be held in urgency and so as to dissolve the constitution review committee and also grant the approval of revised constitution.
However, before the approval of the constitution, two members of the association raised an observation as touching the appointment of the academic director, and likewise, the need for students of the University of Ibadan distance learning centre to join the association fully. Both observations were responded to, “the appointment is not in sync with any part of the constitution.” also, “the DLC students can not be fully part of the association because they run a different calendar with a different administration.” the president of the association stated.
In the process of approval, 16 members of the association moved a motion of approval in support of the constitution, and this was adopted, out of the 18 members that were present.
Further comments in the congress addressed the need for members of the association to participate in the Western Conference of Students of English and Literary Studies [WESTCOSELS]. Also, the Social Director, Afolabi Gloria, enjoined members of the association to join the arranged committee in the faculty with a promise that links would be forwarded afterward.
At the latter part of the AOB, a student, Favour, from 400 level commented on the need for the Public Relations Officer, Okunola Demilade to regulate the way he tags people on the family page, “it is always very annoying.” she stated. Then, the president responded, stating the need for the tag as a reason to call people’s attention to every piece of information posted on the group. Finally the Congress ended with a motion.
