The National Association of Students of English and Literary Studies Press (NASELS Press) conducted its traditional Press Night on Tuesday, March 19th, 2024, at the Mike Okiro Resources Centre.

The Press Night was organized for aspirants to present their manifestos, and for the pressmen to scrutinize their plans, feasibility, and the logicality of all the contestants.

However, the Press Night had in attendance some notable campus journalists from different press organizations, such as; Indy Press, Queens Press, Classics Press, and in-house journalists.

Having two aspirants on seats at the period of 5:30 pm, the first aspirant running for the post of Social Director, Miss Afolabi Gloria, came up. She promised to create social bonds across levels. Then, the second aspirant vying for the post of P.R.O( Public Relations Officer), Mr Demilade Okunola was called on immediately. He expressed his written manifesto that he will foster a vibrant and connected community for NASELSites. Also, the aspirant for the post of General Secretary, Miss Okoh Doris Uche Chukwu, highlighted her vision of creating proper documentation, and as well promised to document course materials on Google Drive.

Furthermore, the head executive candidates, presidential and vice presidential candidates, were called. Miss Ali Tishi, running for Vice President, promised to foster inclusivity within the NASELSites community. In addition, She promised to enhance scholarly publications in the department, and she promised to revive the departmental Literary and Debating Society. In addition, Miss Hamzat Yetunde, who is also contesting for the Vice President post, pledged to rejuvenate the departmental library and establish a functional E-Library for the students’ easy access.

Then, Mr ” Bomi Adamson, the spearheading candidate for the Presidential position, stated in his manifesto that an effective Legislative Council would be established. Likewise, he stated that he would put in place proper training to increase the NASELS Press quality and productivity. However, he was reminded of the autonomy of the press. Moreover, his main goals for the department were grouped into four arms which are: Academic vision, Club vision, Constitutional vision, and Inter-relationship vision.

After reviewing the manifestos, the panel of judges, comprising U.C.J representatives and the departmental Board of Editors, evaluated the candidates using the parameter assessment which includes dressing, punctuality, logic, composure, plans, and feasibility.

Therefore, in the end, after collating the results based on the aforementioned criteria, the following are the culmination:

Miss Afolabi Gloria – 62%,

Mr. Okunola Demilade – 51%,

Miss Okoh Doris – 64%

Miss Ali Tishi – 46%

Miss Hamzat Yetude – 64%

Mr. Adamson ‘Bomi – 43%.
