In continuation of the African Pragmatic Conference 2024, Pragmaticians comprising students, lecturers among others gathered at the Subomi Balogun Conference Centre, University of Ibadan to commemorate the year’s edition: “Pragmatics and Global Security.”

The morning session of the conference which started at the early hours of Tuesday, 20th February, 2024 ended around 10:30 a.m after which there was a tea break which transitioned the attendees into the afternoon session.

Attendees were divided into different seminar groups where papers were presented by the distinguished members of the African Pragmatics Association on a number of topics among which are “Language, Style And Ideology In Selected Nigerian Banks’ Advertising Slogans”, “Discourse Issues and Context in Selected Bollywood Movies”, “Pragmatics of Trauma in Selected #ENDSARS Protest Image”, etc.

While delivering the paper “Language, Style And Ideology In Selected Nigerian Banks’ Advertising Slogans” co-authored by the trio: J.O Ayodabo, M.O Oduola and R.F Olanrewaju, the key speaker stressed the use of slogans by banks as well as how the ideologies of different banks are encapsulated in their slogan. In his words, banks “fire cannon of interest through slogans.” Further speaking, he identified the thematic focusing, tone and mood captured by these slogans.

The session ended with questions from the audience directed to those who had presented their papers. Following the question and answer session, members were allowed to take tea breaks in preparation for the afternoon session.
