The African Pragmatics Association in collaboration with the Department of English, University of Ibadan, hosted and kick-started the 3rd African Pragmatics Conference, on Monday, 19th of February at Subomi Balogun Conference Center.
The event will be for three consecutive days with the theme: Pragmatic and Global Security. Meanwhile, it hosted the presence of the Vice-chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, vice chancellor of the University of Ghana Prof. Nana Aba, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts Prof. Solomon Oyetade, the Head of the Department of English Prof. Fashina, Prof. Remi Raji, Prof. Adegbite of Obafemi Awolowo University , and Prof. Esther Ugwu, from the Department of English, University of Benin.
The event started with an opening speech by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Prof. Oyetade, after that, the secretary of the association Prof Jeff gave his speech virtually, then to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana Prof. Nana Aba who also gave her speech which included the history of the association and also the importance of the association.
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan Prof. Kayode Adebowale also gave his speech which stressed the university’s focus on Doctorer Academy which focuses on ways to improve postgraduate activity, and he also talked about actions taken by the university to reduce the number of undergraduate and increase the number of postgraduate.
After the speech by the dignitaries, presentations started and Prof. Benson Ojwang from the Department of Language and Literature, Kamosi Friends University, Kamosi Kenya gave his speech, followed by different presentations by different people with topics relating to the theme of the event. Prof.Remi Raji of the Department of English also gave his speech.
After all the presentations the business meeting started with speakers from different parts of Africa, and they started with the inception of the association, and the opportunity to contribute was given to the attendees. The session concluded with that.
The event for the first day ended with a cocktail party sponsored by the Vice-chancellor.
