The University of Ibadan, on Sunday, released a broadcast message to the students’ emails to inform the students of the free access to the internet.

In the email sent to the students, the university management echoed that the students agreed with the University’s Information Technology and Media Service policy concerning using the network access. “By using the Internet/Network access provided by the University of Ibadan, users agree to the University’s Information Technology and Media Services policy, as published and as amended whenever the need arises. The University is providing access to its computer networks and the Internet for educational purposes only. The Users must always exercise utmost caution and reasonable care.”

Further, the management emphasized that access to the free internet is a privilege, not a right. Therefore, the students are expected to use it appropriately. “The University understands and believes that the benefits of the rich, digital resources available through the World Wide Web outweigh any disadvantages. However, access granted by the University is not a right but a privilege, which carries with it great responsibilities. Misuse or abuse will be interpreted very broadly to mean any violation of this agreement or any other use that is not included in the agreement but has the effect of harming the University and/or any other legitimate user.”

Students are therefore expected to register via the link sent to their email and accept all policies stated. Every rule given must be strictly adhered to, and users are instructed to stay away from sharing their accounts with any third party. Also, students’ use of the internet must not interfere with the work of other students or university employees. It is stated that failure to adhere to the rules and agreement will attract disciplinary actions or termination from using the Internet.

However, it was also stated that internet access is only made available for educational purposes, and it will be available only at specific areas like the faculty library, Kenneth Dike Library, halls of residences, and recreation centers like alumni centers.
