The Student Union held a Town hall meeting on the 15th of February, 2024 with the University Management at Trenchard Hall, and this meeting was aimed at fostering an interactive session with students’ experiences on campus.

The interactive session theme “A morning with the school management” witnessed the attendance of many prestigious personalities on campus. Some of which are Prof.Adebowale, the University Vice Chancellor, DVC Academic, DVC Work and Research, Dean of Students Affairs, Provost – of College of Medicine, Director of Work, Chief Security Officer, Director of Jaja, staff-student Leaders representing their Halls, Faculties, Department, Students, and some other reputable personnel of the University.

The gathering was approached with a dialogue mode and students present raised their complaints regarding their halls of residence, faculties, and various departments.

On the first note, the issue of electricity and transportation were raised by the SU President, Samson Samuel Tobiloba, he claimed that the school transportation is more expensive than outside the campus and he would like the school to look into it. He also talked about electricity, and water supply on campus which the Director of Works and Vice-Chancellor addressed respectively. The management then pronounced that drop is now #300.

Also, Student Leaders on campus spoke on the challenges they face in their jurisdiction and the school generally. As raised by the President of the Faculty of Education, he admitted that the students of his faculty are regarded as second-class citizens in their respective teaching course facilities, with this, the management emphasized that every student has equal rights in the University and therefore important measures will be taken on it.

In addition, students also spoke about security over sexual harassment and drug abuse on campus. To this, the management stated that they will never tolerate such on campus and there shall be penalty for disobedience. However, the university management advised students to watch out for their personal security by dressing properly to avoid tempting the opposite sex, also limiting their closeness with opposite sex, avoiding walking late at night, and all others that facilitate insecurity.

In the sequence of the meeting, Alexander Brown Hall located in the University College Hospital was also represented and the Speaker of the hall pleaded with the management alongside other issues to provide alternatives for students to charge their gadgets when the power supply is not available.

Likewise, on issue regarding the SUB pitch as raised by Samuel Oluwatobiloba, Student Union President. To this, the Vice Chancellor admitted that Awo Stadium is the only recognized sport pitch in the University.

Furthermore, many other issues were raised about the lab fees, basic dues, dumps in Zik Hall, electricity issues on hostel blocks, water supply in block I in Queens Hall, the restrooms at the Faculty of Arts, attendance to students in Jaja, free Internet service and ICC infrastructure, and many more.

In the end, the Vice Chancellor ends the meeting by thanking everyone in attendance and promising to look into everything that has been discussed in the town hall meeting, as he also looks forward to more interactive sessions in consequent days.
