The National Association of Students of English and Literary Studies (NASELS), University of Ibadan Branch, is an association of students of English. The association was formerly known as the English Studies Students Association, but it was changed to the Association of Students of English in 1991, but later changed to its present name in 2006.

NASELS is a forum for students to formally express their views and take specific decisions on any issue that affects its members, and make representations through its elected representatives. But is it acceptable to let a few individuals dictate the course of our dear department, or should we collectively strive for a more inclusive decision-making process?

Political apathy is really taking over and destroying the collective growth of the NASELS. We have come so far now to relax and relapse into a total lack of interest, engagement or active participation by students of English. Right from the onset of politics and political campaigns in the Department of English, it has been manifesting as a disinterest in understanding or influencing the direction of the department, leading to a passive or indifferent approach towards organized politics.

This apathy can hinder effective communication, collaboration, and the overall ability of the department to collectively address challenges or contribute to its own development. Is our collective silence contributing to the challenges we face, or can we find strength in our unity to overcome them? Do we believe our voices do not matter, or are we willing to engage in the political process to make a difference?

Past administrations of the department had been nothing to write home about and left much to be desired. Right from past administrations, to Team Cohesion, and the newest bride at the steer of NASELS UI, Team Rejuvenation, there have been torrents of political controversies and succession of political setbacks resulting from political apathy in the department.

Are we willing to accept the status quo, or are we ready to challenge it for the betterment of our department? Do we want to be passive observers or active participants in shaping the future of our department? Can we afford to remain silent on issues that impact us, or should we be more vocal in advocating for our interests? Are we content to let decisions be made without our input, or do we want to actively shape the direction of our department?

Political apathy, characterized by disinterest and passivity towards political processes, decision-making, and issues, can be a subtle but formidable force within academic environments. Our department, despite its vibrant academic discourse, is not immune to this trend and it is crucial to dissect the underlying causes to address this issue effectively.

One factor contributing to student apathy may be a perception of detachment from the decision-making processes that shape the academic journey. When students feel their voices are unheard or irrelevant in the broader departmental dynamics, a sense of disillusionment and disinterest can take root. Thus, fostering a culture of inclusivity and transparent communication becomes imperative to counter this detachment. Fostering communication and integrating civic responsibility can help break down the walls of apathy in the department.

The implications of student political apathy extend beyond the immediate academic environment. In a world that demands informed and engaged citizens, the university experience should be a training ground for active participation in civic life. Apathy in our department may reflect a broader societal trend, and addressing it can contribute to shaping responsible and participatory citizens. Establishing student forums, and involving students in decision-making processes can empower them to become contributors to the department’s development.

Tackling political apathy among students in our department demands a collective and team-oriented approach from both students and the current administration. We can break down the walls of apathy and pave the way for an engaged and empowered student body. This transformation is not just essential for our department’s vitality but also for nurturing the leaders and informed citizens of tomorrow.

The urgency of our collective political engagement cannot be overstated. As students, we stand at a crossroad where our apathy can either contribute to the stagnation of democratic discourse or spark a revitalization of active citizenship. Let this piece serve as a call to action, a reminder that our voices matter, and our participation is the catalyst for meaningful change.

It is not enough to passively observe the political landscape; we must, instead, step into the arena, armed with our convictions, ideas, and the belief that our involvement can shape the course of our collective future. The spirit of political participation awaits our embrace, and it is through our collaboration and commitment that we can rekindle the flame of democracy, ensuring that our voices resonate in the corridors of power, advocating for a future that reflects our values and aspirations. THE TIME FOR POLITICAL AWAKENING IS NOW!
