Amidst the heightened academic atmosphere of examination, the National Association of Students of English and Literary Studies(NASELS) in conjunction with the Linguistics Student Association of Nigeria(LINSA) and the Yoruba Students Association of Nigeria (YOSSAN) organized a night for karaoke and movie tagged Unearthly Frights.

This event happened at the Faculty of Arts, LLT on the 24th of November, 2023 and it accommodated more than 100 students at the first hour of the commencement, and in the subsequent hours spent, it increased to more than 200 students in total.

The event featured a competition of songs from the cohabiting departments and it also entertained the audience with a horror movie titled “Evil Dead Rise”.

After the movie, the NASELS Press interviewed some attendees. From the perspective of the audience, many of them enjoyed the merriment that came with the moment, and others regretted their coming on the cause of their displeasure with a scary movie.

Among the audience interviewed is Paul Tomilola, a 200-level student of the Department of English and she stated that the best of her moment was the karaoke before the movie. She opined, “Comedy or romance would be the best for the next show.”

Also, Mbajuka Rita, a 200-level student commented that she had seen the movie before. However, she started,  “It was an exhilarating experience. I look out for more such events from the department.”

Further, the NASELS Financial Secretary, Ali Tishi, a 300-level student, when asked if the movie was gothic,  replied to the NASELS Press. In her opinion, the movie was a scary one. Consequently, she nearly fainted. Therefore, she concluded that it was the end of the horror movie that she loved to see.

A 400-level student, Aletta Kelechi, also commented that he enjoyed the movie because he is not new to horror movies and in further days, he expects more from the department.

Lastly, Olasunkanmi Sodiq Tunde, a final year student of the English Department, told the NASELS Press ” It is very interesting. I’m extending a big chunk of kudos to the team in charge. Well done. I enjoyed being together with a bae and without a bae, it’d have been a scary night” and in his expectations, he said “we need a pause from these academic stresses sometimes. So, having more of this is a welcomed idea”

Nonetheless, the movie night was gyrated with the students’ enthusiasm in seeing the horror movie and the tumultuous noise. The NASELSites ate popcorn and drank Chapman as they watched the intriguing events of the movie unfold.
