In the breakdown of Nasels dues for the 2021/2022 academic session, Naselsites are to pay a compulsory basic due of #3000 as against the #2500 they paid for the last session. The departmental association, led by Ifeoluwa Adeniyi, cited inflation and the recent hike in the prices of things as the reasons for the increase in basic dues. 

Members of Nasels Press talked with some Naselsites to find out their thoughts on the increase. Here are what some of them said:

“While some people might not be able to afford it, I feel it’s a necessary step if we’re to get anything substantial as our package. Everything is way expensive now, so I think an increase is justified.”

“Well, I think it’s okay considering how expensive things have become. It’s absolutely normal for the increment to take place so that we can collect a very good package at the end of the session.”

“Not long, I stumbled on a press release probably from campus journalist that the hall reps met with the dean or so and that they talked about not collecting more than 3000 for the basic dues in hostels instead of the usual 2500

Weeks later, I got to know that Afas was going to do the same and then nasels. It occurred to me that everyone was probably doing what everyone was doing. Perhaps, with no reason. It’s the new normal. 

In my opinion, such a conclusion should not be reached without the prior engagement of the students”

“Well, it depends on the package we’re given at the end of the session. 

Looking at the economy of the country and the way the prices of goods keep on inflating, I don’t really see anything wrong with the increment.”

“I’m in support of it as long as the packages coming with it are superb but if it’s still the same thing then there’s no point increasing the fee.”

I personally believe there is nothing wrong with the increment of the price.

Let’s be honest, there is money out there. It’s just funny that everyone is shouting no money. If the school fee is raised to 50k, people will still pay.  More than 80% of us buy data, and in a month we use as much as 3k data without realizing it.

The extra 500 will go a long way to catering to the needs of students in the department. The excos cannot be using their money to run the administration.  

I was part of the committee in my hostel the last session and if I did not learn anything, I learnt that things are expensive.

If we want quality, let us pay for it abeg.

“To me, there’s nothing bad about the increment. We will all agree that the same thing we bought a year or two years ago can’t be bought at the same price this year. The price of things has skyrocketed. So, it is only reasonable for them to increase the basic dues. 

I was the treasurer of the immediate past executives and from the experience, I can tell you how hard it was to use the #2,500 to get quality things as packages. Things have become really expensive. So, if we want to get quality things as Nasels packages then the increment of #500 will help achieve that.”’
