COURSE REGISTRATION
Every academic year, a student must register for all the courses he or she is taking. These courses often may be Compulsory, Required or Elective. As a fresh student, there is ample time to consider your options, particularly as regards external and internal electives. Do not register only based on someone’s prescription nor should you register without having taken enough time to consider your choices well. It’s safe to do your course registration early because of subsequent steps which include the signing of the course form, submission of the original course form to the department and so on. So, ideally, in two, three or a maximum of 4 weeks, all necessary procedures on course registration should have been finalised.
Also, students must fulfil the minimum unit requirements for a session. If, for instance, the minimum units for a session is 42 while the maximum is 45, a student must not take less than the former nor beyond the latter. The level course adviser is the go-to as regards the number of units to be taken.
TIMETABLE
The Faculty of Arts as well as each department under it release separate timetables every semester. Often, the fixtures conflate each other and you may be at a loss as regards which one to follow. Well, here’s what you need to know. The departmental timetable always takes pre-eminence. Unless rescheduled otherwise, the time slated for a course on the departmental timetable is the meeting time for lectures. Do not forget this applies to your external electives as well. You should visit the department(s) from which you are borrowing for updates on their list of courses as well as their approved timetable.
G.E.S COURSES
G.E.S courses are taken across the campus. A minimum pass mark of 45 must be attained and thus required for the successful completion of the degree. Again, your course adviser will tell you which G.E.S courses you must take for the session. Likewise, the G.E.S courses you’re taking as an Arts student may differ from that of your friend in the Sciences. Hence, any confusion that may stem from seeing your mates taking different courses should not arise. If they do, meet your course adviser for clarifications.
Additionally, the time for G.E.S courses is not included in the Faculty or departmental timetable. The decision is thus left with the students and the tutor to seek an appropriate time that will be convenient to all and sundry.
ELECTIVES
There are internal and external electives. Internal electives are those you take within your department. Your course adviser will inform you of the required number of units for both internal and external electives. While some students choose randomly what courses to borrow, however, it is only ideal to take courses that you’re passionate about and that stimulate your intellectual curiosity. It’s only appropriate for a language enthusiast to thus take courses from either Linguistics, European Studies, or, even Latin and Greek courses offered by the Classics department. The same applies to internal electives.
While it is acceptable to borrow courses from a single department, it is more important to note that diversifying one’s interests is the pathway to sustainability as the University requires you to have borrowed from at least five departments before graduation.
We believe and sincerely hope that these will illuminate your paths as you commence your studies and we wish you Godspeed in your academic journey.
