Akeju Oluwasegun , a 400 Level student of the Department of Law has emerged as the winner of the 2019/2020 session Students Union presidential election held today Saturday, 7th November 2019 at the University of Ibadan, Oyo state.

According to the results of the election which was announced this evening by the chairman of the electoral commission, Professor Ojela and made the results available to the press (in the presence of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olayinka) Mr Akeju defeated his sole rival, Olofinlade Ebeneezer, popularly known as “Hesssy” with total votes of 2753 (a wide margin of 615 votes) against 2138 votes.

The election which was conducted through electronic voting system began late around 11 am as against the initial time of 8:00 am following some technical hitches experienced by voters, as the severe was undergoing network fluctuations.

The development forced the electoral commission to extend voting beyond the official time of 4:00pm to 8:00pm in order to enable eligible voters to exercise their franchise.

Other results released by the electoral commission indicate that Miss Oladiti Aishat , a sole candidate for the position of Vice President polled the total votes of 4227, with 737 undecided votes to emerged as the Vice President elect. While Fijabi Israel emerged as the General Secretary with a total votes of 4591(373 undecided votes), Oluwakayode Mustapha beat his opponent, Omotosho Adesina with a total votes of 2846 against 1861, to clinch the position of Assistant General Secretary. Oladeji Richard beat Abdul-fattah Abdul-muhaymin 2575 votes to 1907 to win the House Secretary; Edet Collins polled 4146 to merged as the Treasurer; while the position of Public Relation Officer went to Oladeji Abiodun , who scored a total of 4446 (518 undecided votes).

The election is coming after almost more than two sessions, during which the Prof. Abel Olayinka-led administration suspended the Students Union, in 2017 following protest by students over the non-issuance of student identity card; the consequence of which the university’s students disciplinary committee in reaction, rusticated some members of the students union leadership, with its former President, Ojo Aderemi, given four semesters, while those who were considered “remorseful” by the committee received pardons.
